Recently, the Swedish Armed Forces completed a previously unpublished exercise initiated following the outbreak of coronavirus, COVID-19. A mobile laboratory, where analyzes of the virus have been carried out, has been in use since the end of January.
“The Armed Forces must be at the forefront and prepare for the unpredictable,” says Commander-in-Chief Philip Bacchus, Head of the CBRN Company at the Total Defense Protection Center in Umeå.
After establishing the laboratory, Christer Larsson and other staff were able to quickly confirm, in just one day, an analysis method for the virus. The Academic Hospital in Uppsala, which has an infection protection collaboration with the Swedish Armed Forces, participated in the exercise in parallel by testing whether the mobile laboratory could support civilian health care.
- We showed that we could very quickly establish a functioning analysis chain together with the defense. Should we need to handle many samples, for example in the case of larger outbreaks, we now know that this possibility works, says Erik Salaneck, associate professor and infectious physician at Uppsala Academic Hospital.
When the exercise is now completed, it is a very satisfied Philip Bacchus who summarizes the outcome and the experiences that the Armed Forces can bring.
Exercises and collaborations of this nature can be crucial in winning both time and freedom of action. The Armed Forces, and our collaborators in this project, must be at the forefront and prepare for the unpredictable, he says and is supported by Associate Professor Erik Salaneck;
Healthcare has a much better preparedness for managing outbreaks of high-contagious disease after this exercise.
The reason why the Armed Forces did not communicate anything about the exercise until now is not about any secrecy, says Philip Bacchus;
- No, we do not comment on all the exercises we plan and then carry out.
