You trust Chinese over Russian reactors?

Yes I agree new could soon over Leningrad

I don’t know how Chinese reactors work, but I know well how steal in Russia!

One of Protons exploded at the start, because managers, instead of gold, which should have been in microcircuits, decided to save money and made from other metals
I’m afraid the same with reactors

NATO announced the violation of Danish airspace by a Russian fighter.

On the evening of August 28, the US Air Force B-52H Stratofortress strategic bomber was intercepted by a Russian Su-27 fighter jet in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

The interception occurred when an American aircraft was approaching Danish airspace near Bornholm Island. The Russian Su-27, flying from Kaliningrad, followed the B-52H into Danish airspace, significantly violating NATO airspace.

COVID-19 vaccines developed in Russia and China share a potential shortcoming: They are based on a common cold virus

CanSino Biologics’ (
6185.HK
) vaccine, approved for military use in China, is a modified form of adenovirus type 5, or Ad5.

A vaccine developed by Moscow’s Gamaleya Institute, approved in Russia earlier this month despite limited testing, is based on Ad5 and a second less common adenovirus.

But many people already have antibodies against Ad5, which could cause the immune system to attack the vector instead of responding to the coronavirus

High doses of the Ad5 vector in the CanSino vaccine could induce fever, fueling vaccine skepticism.
Some scientists also worry an Ad5-based vaccine could increase chances of contracting HIV.

Wizard of the Day - Hedy Lamarr - #WIZARDOFTHEDAY

“All creative people want to do the unexpected.” - Hedy Lamarr

Hedy Lamarr was an Austrian-Anerican actress, inventor, and film producer who co-invented an early version of frequency-hopping spread spectrum.

Lamarr was born in Vienna and acted in a number of Austrian, German, and Czech films in her brief early film career, including the controversial Ecstasy (1933). In 1937, she fled from her husband, a wealthy Austrian ammunition manufacturer, secretly moving to Paris and then onward to London. There she met Louis B. Mayer, head of MGM Studios, who offered her a movie contract in Hollywood, where he began promoting her as “the world’s most beautiful woman.”

She became a star in America with her first performance in Algiers which led to other roles with MGM, Warner Brothers, and RKO. Lamarr found she was often typecast so she co-founded a new production studio and starred in its films. She was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.

“Any girl can be glamorous. All you have to do is stand still and look stupid.” - Hedy Lamarr

Although Lamarr had no formal training and was primarily self-taught, she worked in her spare time on various hobbies and inventions, which included an improved traffic stoplight and a tablet that would dissolve in water to create a carbonated drink. The beverage was unsuccessful; Lamarr herself said it tasted like Alka-Seltzer.

She also helped improve aviation designs for Howard Hughes while they dated during the war. She suggested he change the rather square design of his aeroplanes (which she thought looked too slow) to a more streamlined shape, based on pictures of the fastest birds and fish she could find. Lamarr discussed her relationship with Hughes during an interview, saying that while they dated, he actively supported her inventive “tinkering” hobbies. He put his team of scientists and engineers at her disposal, saying they would do or make anything she asked for.

“I’ve met the most interesting people while flying or on a boat. These methods of travel seem to attract the kind of people I want to be with.” - Hedy Lamarr

At the beginning of World War II, Lamarr and composer George Antheil developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes, intended to use frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers.

“We began talking about the war, which, in the late summer of 1940, was looking most extremely black. Hedy said that she did not feel very comfortable, sitting there in Hollywood and making lots of money when things were in such a state. She said that she knew a good deal about munitions and various secret weapons… and that she was thinking seriously of quitting MGM and going to Washington, D.C., to offer her services to the newly established National Inventors Council.” - George Anthiel

In 1942, Lamarr and Anthiel received a US Patent for their “Secret Communications System.” This intended early version of frequency hopping was supposed to use a piano-roll to change among 88 frequencies. The patent was rediscovered in the 1950s during patent searches when private companies independently developed direct-sequence Code Division Multiple Access, a non-frequency-hopping form of spread-spectrum, and has been cited numerous times since.

Spread-spectrum signals are highly resistant to deliberate jamming, unless the adversary has knowledge of the frequency-hopping pattern. Military radios generate the frequency-hopping pattern under the control of a secret TRANSEC that the sender and receiver share in advance. This key is generated by devices such as the KY-57 Speech Security Equipment. United States military radios that use frequency hopping include the JTIDS/MIDS family, the HAVE QUICK Aeronautical Mobile communications system, and the SINCGARS Combat Net Radio, Link-16.

The US Navy did not adopt Lamarr and Antheil’s invention until 1957. It was first adapted in 1957 to develop a sonobuoy before the expiration of the patent, although this was denied by the Navy. At the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, an updated version of their design was installed on Navy ships.

Various spread-spectrum techniques have been incorporated into Bluetooth technology and are similar to methods used in legacy versions of Wi-Fi.

In 1997, Lamarr and Anthiel were jointly honored with the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Pioneer Award. Also in 1997, Lamarr was the first woman to receive the Invention Convention’s BULBIE Gnass Spirit of Achievement Award, known as the “Oscars of inventing.” Recognition of the value of their work resulted in the pair being posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.

Asteroid 32730 Lamarr, discovered by Karl Reinmuth at Heidelberg Observatory in 1951, was named in her memory. The official naming citation was published by the Minor Planet Center in 2019.

“I know why most people never get rich. They put the money ahead of the job. If you just think of the job, the money will automatically follow. This never fails.” - Hedy Lamarr
